Depression Therapy

Depression is a good thing.

What???!!! Depression is a common emotion that we all experience. It is an emotion that serves a purpose much like anxiety. Sometimes our depression can get out of hand and cause frustration and disappointment to take place in our lives. This is when we realize we may need the assistance of a professional to help get us back on track.

The trick is to learn how to effectively experience depression and sadness.

One of the most challenging items with depression is learning how to get ourselves out of a funk in a timely manner. It is easy to feed into our depression and continue to engage in actions that are not improving our sadness.

Depression can take us down, down, down.

Depression can often make us feel hopeless, unmotivated, wanting to isolate, and have little care in ourselves and the world around us. It can be extremely tiring and lead us to want to spend all day in bed – even though we may have already had eight hours of sleep.

Sometimes depression can cause use to contemplate suicide or ponder our own death and what that experience may be like.

One of the hardest steps with depression is reaching out for help. It can be scary to start the process of therapy and can often feel like we are preparing to climb Mount Everest.

Challenging our deepest and darkest emotions/thoughts can be anxiety-producing and can sometimes leave us initially feeling worse before experiencing relief.

But why? Why do you have these emotions?

I treat depression similar to many of the other difficult emotions that we experience as humans. Rather than trying to stop ourselves from thinking about our depression/sadness, I believe in leaning into our difficult emotions and getting curious about where they are coming from and what may be the reason behind them.

This can be a daunting task as our guts usually tell us to run the other way from our difficult emotions or “block them out.”

I encourage clients to explore their difficult feelings within the therapeutic environment and become attuned to what their body and mind is telling them.

Get up close with depression.

What does depression feel like in the body? What are you experiencing right this moment as tears are coming to your eyes? These questions can lead us down a path to understanding our depression and sadness which allows us to develop an effective way to manage our symptoms.

When we truly understand our difficult emotions, we are able to take power away from them.

We begin to realize that these difficult emotions are ever coming and going through us. When we change our outlook toward them, we are able to have a better understanding of their purpose and meaning. I believe this new outlook mixed with implementing self-care and other scientifically proven techniques to boost dopamine and serotonin allow us to experience a lasting change from our depression.
